Education

Emer has taught at some of the most prestigious Contemporary Commercial Music institutions in London.

I gained my Honours Degree in Music from Trinity College of Music (London), as well as a Diploma on the Piano and a Diploma in Classical Singing. Neither of these career paths appealed to me, and instead I embarked on what has become a highly successful career in Contemporary Commercial Music.

My teaching career began whilst I was still studying at Trinity College of Music, working as a Deputy Piano Teacher for various member of the piano faculty at Trinity College of Music Junior Department. Once I graduated however, I moved on to teach Vocals in the world of Contemporary Commercial Music.

My first job was at Vocal Tech (now called BIMM), where I taught a wide range of subjects from Voice Production through to Stage and Studio Techniques and of course Sight Singing!

On leaving Vocal Tech I moved on to become Head of Vocals and establish the Vocal Department at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP). As Head of Vocals I pulled together a hugely talented and highly experienced vocal team, delivering a world class level of education to the next generation of industry vocalists.

While at ICMP, I wrote the Degree course, as well as the Higher Diploma course for vocalists, covering every element of Contemporary Commercial Music vocals I knew a singer would need to establish themselves in the music industry.

Past students have gone on to work for artists such as Dua Lipa, Groove Armada, Debbie Harry, Soul ll Soul, Ellie Goulding etc.

I also taught and coached vocals privately for commercial institutions on a wide range of projects and for several years I worked as Vocal Coach and MD for the Disney UK TV channel.

I have also been fortunate enough to write the hugely successful 'Pop Music Vocals' syllabus for The London College of Music Exams board, with students entering from around the world.

My proudest achievement however is creating and delivering Sing By Sight, my online sight singing course written specifically for Contemporary Commercial Music singers. Click here for more information.

This course was written in response to the need for a sight singing course that was both informative and also useful to singers entering the Contemporary Commercial Music world.

I have written over 700 exercises, all reflecting the various genres a singer can come across in CCM music, and all with specific backing tracks to accompany them. This is because I'm aware there is no point teaching the Theory of sight singing without equipping students with Practical material to help them put every element they learn into practice.
